Somewhere on the North Fork this weekend, a family will pull up to a beach on its return to the North Fork.

Along the way, they’ll pass rows of budding vines, a line developing outside Magic Fountain, and the smoke and reverberating laughter from a backyard country barbecue. On the way back home, perhaps they’ll stop at a farm stand for a bundle of fresh asparagus and some strawberries.

But for now, their sights are set on that one specific destination: the water. (more…)

Vintage furniture and home goods shop Pearl Cottage is returning to Southold for an extended stay. Specializing in a mix of old and new with decidedly “creamy and dreamy” aesthetic with modern Scandinavian influences, the new Main Road shop is currently undergoing renovations ahead of a planned Memorial Day opening.

If the name rings a bell, it might be because Pearl Cottage first made its North Fork debut in the fall of 2016, in the form of a pop-up shop at the former Reichert Family Center on the Main Road in Southold. Though it only lasted a couple months, owners and sisters Laura Hansen and Susan Hansen Fasano had a feeling they’d be bringing the business back.

“We immediately fell in love with the area,” Susan said. “It is a warm, friendly community. We knew we wanted to come back.” (more…)

Watercolorist Melissa Hyatt draws inspiration for her paintings and prints from the salty air and coastal charm of the North Fork. There is a softness to her calming seascapes that reflects both life on the water and the fluidity of the medium. Her Southold home and studio are close to the beach, where she often walks her golden retriever, April, collecting sea glass and other talismans of nature that inspire her pastel-colored artwork.
