There are lots of reasons to visit Love Lane Sweet Shoppe (125 Love Lane, Mattituck, 631-298-2276), whether you’re looking for the perfect gift (serving ware, glassware, bridal party items, birthday cards), North Fork-themed items (t-shirts, hats, mugs and printed napkins) or any of its large, delicious array of candy (from Godiva to holiday treats to penny candy favorites from days gone by). As the stock changes regularly, part of the fun is wandering in to see what you discover.
Proprietor Ashley Rutkowski, who started out working at the Sweet Shoppe with her mother and sister and took over on her own about three years ago, is always available to lend a helping hand. The Shoppe, which has been on Love Lane in its current location since 1996, has “lots of repeat, generally happy customers,” says Rutkowski. 1. Out East T-shirt, $35. The Sweet Shoppe has a great selection of locally themed t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats, with the Hampton Bays-based Out East brand being one of the most popular; available in different colors and styles.

2. Stainless Steel Travel Mug, $40. This handy mug has a graphic of all the North Fork town names and a beachy scene; the Sweet Shoppe carries multiple sizes and styles of travel tumblers and mugs to suit your needs.
3. Golden Rabbit Enamelware Lobster Platter, $65. These durable porcelain-on-steel platters and plates can go from the grill to the table with ease and are dishwasher and oven safe, with a choice of colors and nautical patterns.

4. Straw Clutch, $50. Made by local company Gifts From the Sea, this clutch is decorated with an oyster shell and personalized for a bride-to-be, but you’ll find different styles and options in this cute line of summery bags.
5. Penny Candy and Retro Classics, $10/pound for penny candy; $2-4 for classics. Penny candy mainstays like Mary Janes, taffy, candy cigarettes, Swedish fish and Tootsie Rolls can be found here, as well as old-time favorites like Good & Plenty, Charleston Chews, SweeTarts and Big League Chew, bringing back memories of visits to the corner store after school.
