Southold’s Señor Taco Mexican Grill has new owners and they’re bringing an elevated experience to the space.

The authentic Mexican restaurant with a touch of Tex-Mex opened in early 2022. In November, Nicole Munar and her husband Carlos Alvarez assumed ownership; the space previously owned by Munar’s parents Gerard and Martha Munar.

“It’s still going to be the same brand, it’s the same name,” says Munar. “We’re adding a new menu — we’re going to have some lunch specials going on as well and we’re going to have events going on.”

The menu now features even more authentic Mexican options, says Munar, including vegetarian, baja fish and al pastor tacos. They’ll also have white queso dip, Nutella empanadas and Tex-Mex fan favorites like chili, poppers and wings, while keeping many specialties like carne asada, enchiladas and their other specialty tacos.

Munar is looking forward to hosting more events in the space, like tequila tastings with additive-free, organic tequilas on Saturdays featuring live music.

“We’re putting away Patrón and Casamigos and bringing out the good stuff [for tastings],” says Munar.

She also plans to add line dancing to the restaurant’s scheduled line up, plus bingo evenings.

“We have a large space,” says Munar. “So we really want to see what we can create and have a good experience for the customers around, especially in the wintertime because it’s our down season.”

If you’re interested in hosting your own event at Señor Taco, you’re in luck. Munar and her husband are bringing the catering practices that the Señor Taco locations out west do so well, to put on on-site events like baby showers, bridal showers and weddings.

“We have the space, we have the food, we have the liquor,” says Munar.

Whether you’re in for an event, appeasing a taco craving or picking up takeout, expect an upscale yet fast-paced experience, Munar says.

On Jan. 12 the restaurant held a ribbon-cutting, unveiling the updated space with minor renovations and an exciting future for the Southold location.

Munar plans to continue learning from the local crowd this season to make the space as captivating as possible. “We’re trying to work with what we have, see what they like and learn from our customers,” Munar says.
