Chick’s Agway is Southold’s one-stop shop for pet and livestock supplies, lawn and garden needs — and good advice, always

Chick’s Agway is owned and operated by Val and Dave Cichanowicz, who took over the landmark Southold store in 2000. Agway, which stands for “agricultural way,” began when three farm cooperatives collaborated to open a farm store in 1964, supplying fertilizer, seed potatoes, tractor repair and more to local farmers.

Nowadays, Agway is the go-to place for all your home and garden needs, with items like fertilizers, soil conditioners, yard tools, lawn and garden chemicals, pool supplies and propane. And don’t forget their excellent selection of items for animals, like wild bird feed, livestock and equine feed and supplies, high-quality small-animal food, animal health and grooming supplies and the like.

There’s even a list of six chicken varieties at the register where you can order chicks from Chick’s for delivery (through the Southold Post Office!) every April.

Val Cichanowicz oversees a friendly, well-trained staff eager to help with your home and garden needs. Here’s a selection of unique items they carry.

1. Jonathan Green Wildflower and Meadow Grass Mix, $19.99 for a 1-lb bag

This seed mix contains over 25 annual and perennial wildflowers that will bloom and reseed themselves. It’s great for creating a natural landscape on a portion of property that doesn’t have to be mowed and will attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators.

2. Jim Beam Fish Turner Tongs, $19.99

Agway carries all manner of grilling utensils and accessories, but this two-in-one tool serves as both a spatula and pair of tongs. It’s made to grasp and turn everything from tuna steaks to delicate, flaky fillets.

3. Ball 8-oz Quilted Crystal Jars, $17.99 for 12

Summer garden overflowing? Pick up these classic glass canning jars by Ball to handle your home preserving needs.

4. Coast of Maine Lobster Meal Organic Plant Food for Greening & Leafing, $24.99 for 4 lbs

This fertilizer, made of ground, dehydrated lobster shells, is high in natural nitrogen and calcium to promote strong stem growth, healthy green foliage and a vigorous root system. Cichanowicz notes that the Coast of Maine line is “wildly popular.”

5. Zignature Limited Ingredient Formula for Dogs, $4.39/13-oz can or $46.99/case of 12

Made in California, this better-quality dog food is high in protein and particularly good for animals with allergies. It comes in flavors like duck, kangaroo, lamb and turkey.
