There’s a sweet new competition baking on Love Lane.
North Fork Doughnut Company is running a Spring Break Doughnut Contest, where kids can design the doughnut of their dreams and have a chance to get it actually made.
The idea originally came from Emily Coderre, the manager of NoFoDoCo’s Bay Shore location, who did a smaller version of the contest with local second graders several months ago. The program proved to be such a success that they’re now doing an expanded version at both the Bay Shore and Mattituck locations.
“It’s awesome, right?” exclaimed owner Jimmy Lyons. “Most of our demographic is young mothers and their children. We do a lot of events with schools and stuff with the Girl Scouts. It’s going to be a pretty solid turnout. With the second grade class in Bay Shore we had 20 or 30 [submissions]. This time I think we’re going to get close to 100, maybe even more.”
To participate, parents and their kids can either print out a doughnut template form on NoFoDoCo’s website or pick one up from the shop. Kids can draw their sweet creation on the form, write the name of the doughnut and a brief description. NoFoDoCo asks kids to keep it to five toppings and to specify if there are any fillings. While Lyons notes that there are limits to what they can produce, he hopes to see some wild and fun ideas.
Bring the form in before April 25 to be considered for the competition. The winning doughnuts will be produced and featured in the store from April 30–May 1.
“I think it’s a fun time for families to come out, enjoy the store and what we have here,” said Lyons, who’s excited to see what the local kids come up with.
