The last Saturday in November is Small Business Saturday, which was started to encourage shoppers to patronize small local businesses. Created by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday has become a nationwide counterpart to the big box stores’ takeover of Black Friday, the kickoff to the holiday shopping season.
It’s also an opportunity for small business owners to show their appreciation to their customers as they spread holiday cheer.
“I have always felt that people who visit Greenport on Small Business Saturday aren’t necessarily looking for deals, but instead are just coming out to support our wonderful shops and avoid the chaos and crowds of malls and big box stores,” says Scott Raulsome of Burton’s Books. “It’s a great opportunity for us to thank everyone in person and there’s an always a great energy in the air.”
“I love Small Business Saturday,” says Paula DiDonato of The Giving Room in Southold, who worked on the team that created the original Small Business Saturday promotion at American Express. “Small businesses represent the backbone of the U.S. economy and local businesses return much of their profit to the communities within which they exist. I’m a proud small business owner for nearly 15 years and I am super grateful for the support of our clients.”
