Located in Southold, Founders Tavern has all the makings of traditional American eatery: wings, fried shrimp, pulled pork sandwiches and awarding-winning craft beers. It is also the only place on the North Fork where you can get a Tavern Burger.
Made with fresh ground beef, the marinated Tavern Burger is topped with a combination of Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese, and sliced hot peppers. It is served up thick and juicy with a side of fries or house-cooked potato chips and coleslaw.
Owner Eric Russell says his family recipe inspired the Tavern Burger.
“When I cook, I put hot peppers on everything. My wife and I marinate our burgers at home so when we opened, we put it on the menu,” he said. “It has become a very popular item.”
If the Tavern Burger doesn’t tickle your taste buds, just create your own with the restaurant’s Build-A-Burger option.
Choose from American, Swiss, Vermont cheddar, mozzarella, sautéed mushrooms or onions, bleu cheese or bacon. Or mix and match to your heart’s satisfaction.
For those looking to keep it on the healthier side, you’re in luck. Founders Tavern uses trans fat-free oil and even offers a bunless burger for carb-watchers that is served with a mixed green salad.
