As you approach the entrance of Hallock’s Cider Mill in Laurel, the air becomes sweeter with the scent of freshly prepared pies cooling, soups simmering and breads baking, among other homemade treats.

On any given summer Saturday, restaurant owner Diana DiVello, 56, can be seen greeting guests, slinging cocktails and helping servers learn the ropes.
At the same time, her husband Bob Haase, 55, can be found adding the final touches to a diner’s plate, or tracking down paper for check printers that never seem to stay filled. (more…)

It was hard to get “real voices” for the last report of the season, but a number of hardy souls were still out chasing bass and tautog around the East End. Captain Dave Brennan on the Peconic Star II out of Greenport said the blackfish action was still “pretty good” and that the boat was still catching. It’s only tautog, no cod, no porgies since October 20. So far a 10-1/4 pound bulldog has been the biggest of the season. Brennan will be sailing through December 1 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The Prime Time III out of Orient by the Sea Marina is scheduled through December 4 with no spots available on November 24, 25 and 26 and no sailing on Thanksgiving. (more…)

Boats working out of Orient by the Sea early this week were doing very, very well on fall tautog. Rich Jensen with the Nancy Ann said, “It’s way, way better than last year!” Jensen has had limits for the last two weeks, lots of fish to five pounds and pools generally eight or nine. Best fish of the season have been bulldogs of 11 and 13 pounds. Drops from east of Fishers Island to Rocky Point (East Marion) have all been producing. There are still bluefish around in a few places, chopping up blackfish coming to the top. (more…)
