Restaurateur Adam Lovett and chef Tom Schaudel, partners in Mattituck’s aMano, Southold Social and A Lure in Greenport are trimming their operations.
As of Oct. 11, Lovett and Schaudel quietly and permanently shuttered A Lure Chowder House and Oysteria after 16 years serving sea-centric and creative, convivial fare to the East End in the Port of Egypt Marine. Usually, Nov. 1 is their final day of service for the season. This past spring, the Hinkley Company acquired the 80-year-old family-run marina and boatworks, and made the decision not to renew A Lure’s lease for another season.
The fate of Southold Social is less clear. As of yesterday, sources within the restaurant group told Northforker that reports of the beloved spot’s closure — the subject of regular column The Dish in our upcoming print November issue — are not set in stone, and the Mediterranean-minded destination on Main Road will close after Saturday night service on Oct. 31, but its future at this time is unclear. For now, Lovett says Southold Social is on a hiatus, at least through the winter season.
AMano (13550 Main Road, Mattituck, 631-298-4800), which opened in June 2008, will remain open as will Schaudel and Lovett’s catering businesses.
“AMano is still very much staying relevant. Social Catering is now operating out of aMano and By Hand Catering is here, too,” says Liz Werkmeister, director of marketing and events.
Long-time staffers are being absorbed into the catering businesses and aMano, Werkmeister says.
Lovett and Schaudel are both lifetime veterans of the restaurant industry, and have certainly seen many ups and downs over the years, white-knuckling through myriad national financial crises, the fickle preferences of diners, a global pandemic and, of course, the work-a-day toil that is innate in the hospitality industry. Their fruitful partnership blossomed when they met in the late ’90s, when Lovett took a break from working in restaurants to sell wine to them as a sales rep for importer/distributor Skurnik Wines & Spirits. By the mid-aughts, Schaudel and Lovett embarked on their first project together, PassionFish in Westhampton.
