House proud

Built in 1900, this recently renovated village-adjacent home maintained its classic farmhouse vibes with original details but now offers a modern living space with natural light and a private backyard.

What’s the plan?

The home is entered through a classic rocking chair L-shaped covered porch and upon entry into a spacious foyer, offers a straight, open view into the large eat-in kitchen. The first floor is dedicated to an open-format layout for the living room and kitchen and another flexible room with egress to the porch and interior access to a full bathroom.

Paul T. Betancourt, the Engel & Völkers North Fork agent listing the property, is also the owner and oversaw the renovation. He designed the first-floor space to offer a room that could be used as a third ensuite bedroom. The second floor includes two bedrooms, a full bathroom and an office space, and the floors on this level are wide-plank and original to the house. The window in one of the bedrooms was enlarged to optimize views of the harbor. The basement houses the mechanicals and has storage space.

What’s cooking?

The kitchen has been finished with contemporary white custom cabinetry, Caesarstone Quartz counters and is outfitted with a Viking stove and other stainless-steel appliances. The maple floors are newly installed and the kitchen offers plenty of room for dining.

What else?

Betancourt says the private backyard, hedged with laurels and mature trees, offers plenty of privacy and potential for a swimming pool. The one-car garage has been outfitted with new 100-amp electrical wiring.

One cool thing

Betancourt took care to refurbish historic details such as the pocket doors that set off the first-level flexible space/bedroom and the upstairs bedroom doors. “We tried to keep the integrity of the porch by keeping the original wainscoting and mahogany,” he says. For the front door, he scoured architectural salvage shops and found a suitable replacement at an antique dealer in Pennsylvania, which was restored to suit the house.

Agent’s callout

“This home offers the village lifestyle on a very quiet, residential street, but is still coastal in nature,” Betancourt says. “The beauty of the house is its proximity to the water and its private backyard.”

Location, location, location

Just a few blocks from Stirling Basin and overlooking the marina, the immediate area has the feel of a sleepy New England fishing village. It is less than a mile to the center of the village, and close to two beaches: Peconic Bay Manhasset Beach or to 67 Steps Beach on the Long Island Sound.
