First and South’s Saffron Mussels was a popular recipe in our Cook This Now! roster. (Photo credit: Doug Young)

When Northforker’s sister publication, Southforker, launched in 2022, one of the things I knew I wanted in the mix was a dedicated food column to highlight not just the outstanding ingredients available to us, often a clam shell’s throw from our front doors, but the culinary talent that exists here, too.

Initially, I was writing these, but Doug Young stepped up and asked if he could, perhaps, have a go at shooting and writing the column. Not only is Doug an outstanding photographer, he’s also a bad-ass home cook, often replicating the recipes in his home kitchen for the accompanying story visuals.

Lee Meyer and I decided that adding CTN into the mix for Northforker made a lot of sense, so Doug started writing the column here, too. Every single article he creates, I am amazed not only at the abundance of ideas and creativity of the people who live and work out here making damn delicious things for us all to enjoy, but at how Doug captures it all both with words and photos.

I can’t pick one recipe — and I want to make them all! So I’m going to do two things here for our CTN Top 10: Give you a pile of delicious photos from this past year’s abundance to inspire you and add a link to the one I’m gunning to make in the coming weeks for a (hopeful!) dinner party I’m praying I have the chutzpah to pull off. Hint: It’s one of France’s best party dishes and lends itself oh-so well to the ingredients we have right here on the East End. Thanks for the work and inspiration, Doug!
