There’s a mystery unfolding in Greenport over the next few weeks with a big payoff for anyone who can decipher the clues.
Common Ground Fine Jewelry and Studio (123 Main St. Suite C, Greenport) is hosting the second annual Sparkling Scavenger Hunt. Five holographic “You’re a Gem” stickers are hidden around the Village of Greenport (all outdoors). Clues will be dropped by Common Ground each week on Instagram, and the first person who finds all of the stickers and sends photo proof to the business will win a handmade 14k gold, sapphire and diamond ring valued at $1,700.
“It took about three weeks for last year’s winner to find all five stickers,” says Alexa Suess, Common Ground’s co-owner. “We had people form their own teams and grid-search Greenport. Everyone became very invested.”
Last year the prize was a 14k gold and opal ring, won by the team of Alice Falcone and Northforker photographer David Benthal.
The popular event is free to participate, and the jewelry shop says that they want to promote people getting out and about in Greenport with an exciting incentive.
“While this is a festive time of year for a lot of people, it’s also hard for others who might struggle with the holidays,” says Suess. “We’ve had people thank us for arranging this scavenger hunt because it’s a good incentive to get off of your screens, get outside and take a walk. At the end of the day, we wanted to create a fun community event that could bring joy to everyone. And it’s so lovely to see how excited people get when they find a sticker. It really brings you back to being a kid again — it’s a real-life treasure hunt.”
The stickers are all outside, can be seen from public spaces and can be found within the borders of Greenport Village (not just downtown). The last clue will be released on January 5, so get searching.
