So many farm stands offer corn to bring home and cook, but roasted corn — often sweet roasted corn — is a favorite item for visitors along Sound Avenue and Main Road. And while sweet corn only accounts for 1% of corn grown in the United States, most of the North Fork’s corn growers offer it up for the crunching.
These farm stands are worth the stop along your journey through the North Fork if you’re looking for a roasty, buttery ear (or two) to go.
Bayview Market & Farms; Soundshore Market & Farms
891 Main Road, Riverhead
While Bayview Market & Farms has been operated by Bradford and Lorraine Reeve since 2000 (and they added the Sound Avenue location in 2014 at 5629 Sound Ave., Riverhead), farming on the property goes back six generations and 200 years. Its first farm stand was actually called “Little Chief” after the variety of sweet corn.
Gabrielsen’s Country Farm
200 Herricks Lane, Jamesport, 631-722-3259
While you’re enjoying your corn, peruse the many flower varieties at this farm. If you’re looking to impress your judgy family during the holiday season, buy one of Gabrielsen’s gorgeous centerpieces or wreaths and become the favorite for once (or once again).
Harbes Family Farm
715 Sound Ave., Mattituck, 631-482-7641
In addition to roasted sweet corn, you can also find sweet corn ice cream at Harbes through the end of the season in October. And you don’t need to buy a ticket to Harbes’ Barnyard Adventure to enjoy their corn — it’s available right at the farm stand.
Lewin Farms
812 Sound Ave., Calverton, 631-929-4327
Lewin Farms partnered with North Fork Brewing Co. to create the Lewin Farms Series Golden Ale made with fruits from Lewin’s fields. Corn and a beer? That sounds like a good afternoon to us.
Schmitt’s Farm Stand on Sound
3355 Sound Ave., Riverhead
We’d be doing our readers a disservice if we sent them to Schmitt’s Farm Stand and didn’t mention what the farm is famous for — local horseradish! Holy Schmitt’s Homemade Horseradish comes in a variety of flavors, from beet to mustard to BBQ to cranberry. Buy a jar, you won’t be disappointed. Maybe even try it on that ear of corn…
