I was driving on Main Road in Southold last week when two things grabbed my attention: A farm stand freshly painted the colors of a John Deere tractor and a sign out front that read “local ramps.”  (more…)

Every morning on my way into work, I pass Wells Homestead in Aquebogue.

The red farm stand on Main Road is eye-catching — even more so lately now that it’s filled with beautiful spring flowers.

Several weeks ago, it caught my eye again when I noticed a sign advertising sorrel. (more…)

The temperature might still dip below freezing at night, but the recent openings of these North Fork farm stands and markets remind us that the days of beach permits and boating excursions are drawing near. (more…)

Fourth generation farmer Matt Schmitt, 30, of Riverhead’s Philip A. Schmitt and Son Inc., watched his grandfather and father harvest the first crop of early spring — the horseradish root. In the 1980’s they grew about 25 acres and sold to wholesale markets distributed in time for Easter and Passover.  (more…)
