A cedar-shingled home on the bay combines Nantucket and Nordic sensibilities.

The nuts and bolts

3 bedrooms

4 bathrooms

3,300 square feet

0.47 acres

House proud

Built in 2006, this classically designed cedar-shingled home offers views of Gardiners Bay, Orient Harbor and Bug Light, and your own private white-sand beach. The current owner worked in the fashion industry and used her design sensibility when they gave the interior a cosmetic rehab, says Bridget Elkin, the Compass agent listing the property.

“It had been a dark house and she made it airy, light and beachy with a Scandinavian meets Nantucket vibe, and a Nancy Meyers aesthetic,” Elkin says, referencing the interior designer known for a style that fuses low-key luxury, comfort and hominess.

She called out the shingled roof and classic lines, saying “it’s hard not to like the curb appeal.”

What’s the plan?

The first floor includes the dining room and kitchen adjacent to each other, two bedrooms and a den anchored by a stone fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling windows maximize the light and water views. A wooden floating staircase leads to the second floor, which is anchored by the primary bedroom suite, a fourth full bathroom and a large bedroom/sitting room with four skylights.

What’s cooking?

Renovated under current ownership, the kitchen includes a Sub-Zero refrigerator, Thermador stove and Bosch dishwasher, Shaker-style cabinets and open shelving. The center island features a custom polished-cement counter top. “She achieved a modern clean interior with organic elements that soften [it],” Elkin says.

What else?

The home is warmed by natural wood accents such as the exposed ceiling beams and knobby posts in the open-format areas. The primary bedroom suite features vaulted ceilings, sweeping water views and a balcony where Elkin says you can hear the water lapping on the beach below. The woodwork, stone and tile finishes are custom.

One cool thing

Custom built in bookshelves line the second-floor landing, which has a skylight with a window inset and currently used as a reading nook.

Agent’s callout

“There are a lot of rooms to tuck away in and that can accommodate guests,” Elkin says. “This house is great for hosting, while having nice separation so everyone has privacy and access to their own bathroom.”

Location, location, location

East Marion is known for the Route 25 causeway bisecting Long Island Sound to the north and Gardiner’s Bay to the south and connecting to Orient, about 2.2 miles east. Nearby are Truman’s Beach and park, the Ruth Oliva Nature Preserve at Dam Pond and Old Schoolhouse Park. The Island’s End Golf & Country Club on the eastern edge of Greenport is 1.6 miles from the home, and the town is less than four miles.
