Summer vacation is almost over, but it’s not too late to get in some quality time with the kids in your life before they’re donning backpacks and back to learning.

Here are five fun things to do with your kids before it’s back to school.

An aquatic adventure at Long Island Aquarium

Long Island Aquarium is open seven days and is a sight to behold for kids (and adults!) who love sea creatures big and small. There’s also the new Eye Opener, a giant treehouse adventure with rope bridges, slides, and a view of the Peconic River at the very top.

Delectable local ice cream

Snowflake Ice Cream Shoppe in Riverhead has fan-favorite flavors like Cookie Monster, Birthday Cake and Banana Split, while Magic Fountain in Mattituck has a rotating roster of flavors like peanut butter fudge, the Northforker (blueberry ice cream with fresh lemon and cheesecake pieces) and butter pecan.

Browse for books at a local store

It’s never too early to get your kid lost in a good book. Find great children’s literature at local stores like A Book Place in Riverhead or Burton’s Bookstore in Greenport. Might we recommend the Montauk Mike books? These cute picture books portray the adventures of a very hungry — but friendly — shark in Montauk.
