Arni Paperie in Southold has beautiful gifts.

Now more than ever it’s so important to support local and shop small.

We asked northforker staffers to dish on their favorite North Fork stores to shop for the upcoming holidays. Black Friday is a whole lot calmer when you keep it local, and on the following day, area towns including Greenport and Southold are offering special discounts and raffles for so-called Small Business Saturday. Here are seven of our favorite spots across the North Fork to shop safely this holiday season.

Buying your books at a local bookstore has 600 percent more local economic benefit than buying your books from a certain cardboard-happy online retailer, according to one 2019 study. And luckily, we have an amazing one right in Greenport: Burton’s Bookstore. My family of readers loves the surprisingly huge variety of titles here, including a lively children’s section. If you don’t know what book to give as a gift, they’ll recommend one — and if what you want isn’t in stock, they’ll order it and have it to you in days. That’s prime service.” – Sara Austin, Editorial Director
