Valerie Pattit brings out more corn at Wowak Farm Stand (credit: Felicia LaLomia).

Each week, we will be spotlighting a different farm stand on the North Fork as more open up. Wowak Farms, with its recognizable hand painted sign on Main Road in Laurel, is open everyday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Name: Wowak Farms

History: The iconic farm stand opened up about 20 years ago, but the Wowak family started farming long before that. In the 1970s, Tom Wowak learned to farm in Jamesport from his father, who immigrated from Poland. He started a farm of his own and sold wholesale potatoes until the early 2000s. Tom’s daughter Valerie Pettit helped him to open the farm stand at its current location, and she and her husband, Kevin Pettit, work there now alongside Tom.

What they are offering: Corn, tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, pepper, potatoes, string beans, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, acorn squash and more.

What they will offer: broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, pumpkins and more.
