“Tacky tchotchkes, floral wallpaper and store-bought muffins might come to mind when you think of bed-and-breakfasts, but America’s best B&Bs are beautiful houses with modern amenities and fantastic, often homegrown food,” states Food and Wine writer Alessandra Bulow.

Shinn Estate in Mattituck is one of the few vineyards on the North Fork to accommodate overnight guests.
“Former NYC restaurateurs David Page and Barbara Shinn host guests in a remodeled farmhouse at their Long Island vineyard, Shinn Estate,” according to the blurb that appears on Food & Wine’s website. “Page, who cooked at Manhattan’s beloved Home restaurant, prepares breakfast dishes, like slow-cooked eggs with savory biscuits, each morning.”
Bulow’s description of North Fork Table & Inn makes us want to reserve a stay before the establishment is sold to new owners. It is currently on the market for $3.8 million.
“Former Aureole chef Gerry Hayden and pastry authority Claudia Fleming own this inn with a public restaurant,” according to the writeup. “The couple serves New American dishes, such as raw hamachi and seared Hudson Valley foie gras for dinner and stellar seasonal scones in the morning. Those staying overnight sleep in cherrywood sleigh beds.”
“Country roads, flowering vines, farm-to-table fare — Long Island’s North Fork represents the beachgoing rural ideal far better than occasional weekends at the Hamptons,” Tablet states on its website.
Shelter Island’s La Maison Blanche and Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton also made the list.
