The North Fork is rich in unique, local artists and Southold’s own Cynthia Wells is no exception. Her expressionist paintings have gained a reputation as imaginative and thought provoking, and now they are on display at Rothman’s Gallery in Southold.
Wells has more than 90 animation and directing credits including supervising animator credits on “Once Upon A Forest,” and “The Thief and the Cobbler” and for two Emmy award-winning television shows. She was also the first woman to be nominated for two Annie awards – the animation industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.
She is showing her work on the North Fork for the first time.
The five large oil paints showcased at Rothman’s convey Wells’ use of vibrant color and high relief lighting. The pieces depict the limits of body contortion, inspired in part by her time working in animation.
Since moving to Southold, Wells has produced fine art prints of the North Fork’s endangered osprey and piping plover. Her most recent works are silverpoint original drawings of octopuses and sea horses.
Her work will be on display at the gallery, located at 54100 Main Road, Southold, until July 6.
