With a melody as synonymous with Christmas as gifts under the tree, it just wouldn’t be the holidays without George Balanchine’s classic “The Nutcracker.”

The two-act ballet, performed by countless companies, tells the story of young Marie Stahlbaum’s favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, who comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. While it is famously shown at Lincoln Center there are plenty of places on the East End (and two slightly up-Island) to check it out.
