If you’re reading this, it’s our guess that you’re a parent or caregiver and you know that being stuck at home with the kids is no easy feat.

Sure, you can help them tune in to a live reading of Pete the Cat by illustrator James Dean, or set them up for a daily lunch doodle alongside famed children’s book author Mo Willems, or even live stream webcams from zoos and aquariums across the country.

While those ideas will certainly help pass the time, we think it’s important not to forget that some local places are offering fun activities for kids to do.

Here are three great things for kids to do at home during the coronavirus quarantine.

For the artists: The Painted Canvas’ Artzi Kits

Let’s face it, the same old paper and crayons get boring after a while. The Painted Canvas, located in The Shoppes at East Wind in Wading River, has added a creative outlet during these days at home. Artzi Kits come in a wide variety of designs for all ages and include a pre-designed canvas, two brushes and 10-12 paints depending on the canvas size chosen. Kit prices start at $28. Designed canvases can also be purchased a la carte. Order on their website and choose delivery or curbside pickup at their store location. Order by 2 p.m. for same-day delivery.

For science lovers: Long Island Science Center’s online STEM classes

Even though the Long Island Science Center in Riverhead is temporarily closed, they are still offering an amazing lineup of online classes live through Zoom to keep your learners learning. The full schedule, which can be found on the center’s Facebook and website, includes “Be a Microbiologist,” where students will learn how easily germs are spread and participate in a hands-on home experiment, as well as “All About Air” where students investigate the properties of air, using balls, balloons, bags, and even a hairdryer. Classes are offered on a pay-what-you-can donation basis.
