THE GIST Eight years ago, when she opened SpecialTea House in Greenport, Deborah Schade was aiming to create a feminine escape. A 35-year salon owner and operator, Schade’s a natural businesswoman — and her licensed esthetician daughter, Victoria, is following in her footsteps. In 2018, the duo turned a three-story Victorian home on Main Street into a charmingly quaint tearoom, salon and spa called Special Effects offering an array of services, along with small bites, teas, desserts, herbal and tisane beverages and a cool collection of gifts.

THE VIBE Deborah’s hobby of collecting tea ware and her love for hosting has resulted in an anything-but-average experience at SpecialTea House. Decorated in pastels, the bright dining space is cloaked in drapery, antique fixtures and formal table settings but still feels cozy. And the glitz and glam isn’t confined to the salon: each teahouse guest is presented with exquisitely arranged food and drinks. Salon and spa goers are never forgotten, though, as anyone who comes in for a service is offered a cup of tea.

THE FOOD At the heart of SpecialTea House’s menu are Harney & Sons and Eco-Prima’s loose-leaf black, green and tisane teas, along with blends like peaches and ginger, orange passionfruit, lavender lemonade and strawberry kiwi. Choose from one of three afternoon tea options, each of which includes hot or iced tea and homemade bites. A minimalist might go for the simple afternoon tea, which includes all the menu’s staples. For a more elevated tiered plate, the classic afternoon tea features protein options and sweets. And if you’re in the mood for an even fuller plate, the special afternoon tea comes with a flute of sparkling tea and additional tasty treats.

Seasonal Scone with Cream & Jam

With a wide selection of savory flavors such as cheddar chive and fruit versions like blueberry lavender and orange pecan, each scone boasts a moist, buttery texture.

Shrimp Salad Crostini

Aromatic dill and Old Bay seasoning add vibrance to this bright shrimp salad served atop a crunchy crostini.

Cucumber Finger Sandwiches

For a light bite, dig into the lemon-dill cream cheese or chive-filled butter smothered sandwiches with thin cucumber slices between airy squares or triangles of white bread.

Chicken Salad on Croissant

Seasonal inspiration switches up this fan favorite but grapes and fresh herbs can always be found in the mix, giving the classic spread, nestled inside a soft, buttery croissant, a lush, refreshing essence.

Spinach & Feta Quiche Bite

A flaky crust and salty smack of feta give balance to this decadent nibble, which has emerged as one of the tearoom’s protein-packed portions.

Assorted Sweets

Whether it’s a raspberry and almond thumbprint cookie, lavender shortbread, chocolate pot or other confection, each dessert has delicate qualities that pair perfectly with a citrus, floral, bold or bright tea.
