House proud

The seller renovated this home with the idea of keeping it in the family, but as plans changed, it is now on offer, renovated to the studs, new mechanicals and systems, but with plenty of its original charm intact.

The wide-plank hardwood floors are original as are the decorative doors. “This home has classical millwork detail that you don’t see much of today,” says Richard Connelly, who along with his wife, Susan, is representing the listing at Douglas Elliman.

“He was a real craftsman who took a lot of pride in his work. He did it out of love for his daughter, who was going to occupy the house,” says Susan. Indeed, the project was a family effort, as the daughter—an interior designer—sourced all the furnishings and fixtures, but then had a change of plans and decided to stay in her home. The home can be offered as is, with furnishings negotiated in a separate transaction.

What’s the plan?

The house is entered through a wide covered porch into a foyer that leads to the 263-square-foot eat-in kitchen, beyond which is an 150-square foot ensuite bedroom. The open kitchen/dining format serves as the hub for a half bathroom, access to the 195-square-foot living room and the staircase to the second level. Two bedrooms, one of which is a 220-square-foot ensuite primary with oversized, custom-made closet, occupy the second floor, with a half bathroom accessed in the hallway. The unfinished 546-square-foot basement has a Bilco door entrance and potential to be finished into recreation or other space.

What’s cooking?

White Shaker-style cabinetry is topped with quartz and finished with brass hardware. The center island seats up to four, and the stainless-steel appliance suite is newly installed.

What else?

“One of the many benefits of this property is there is plenty of room for a pool—in fact, it begs for a pool,” says Richard. With that in mind, one of the outbuildings has hookups for water and electric and can be converted to a pool house.

Amenities and more

The yard has two newly rebuilt structures.

The custom-tiled bathrooms are designed to coordinate with the colors of the vanities.

One cool thing

The house is located on the corner of Cemetery Road and faces a small unnamed road. Susan says a buyer could inquire with the township on the possibility of naming rights for the road, which would be the ultimate customization.

Agent’s callout

“This house has classic old North Fork charm and if you want the razzmatazz, you have Greenport right down the road,” says Susan, also citing proximity to lifestyle conveniences such as vineyards, farm stands and beaches.

Location, location, location

East Marion, say the agents, is receiving notice for its low-key reputation that offers a bucolic lifestyle but with opportunity to own a classic home. “There is a lot of classical architecture throughout [the area] and a lot of people are revitalizing these older-style homes,” says Richard.

This home is less than three miles from the village of Greenport, and offers close proximity to Truman’s Beach (1.6 miles), Ruth Oliva Preserve at Dam Pond (.4 miles), and Arshamomaque Preserve (3.8 miles). Orient Beach State Park is eight miles from the home.
