Yoga Folk, the new fitness studio opening Jan. 25 at 13175 Main Road in Mattituck, has ambitions to do more than just get people moving. Founder and instructor Savannah Sellick hopes to help people find a community.

“What makes Yoga Folk different from other yoga studios is that it’s a social space to connect with people in your community,” says Sellick. “It’s more than just a yoga studio.”

The studio offers all of the expected yoga classes, from vinyasa flow to Ashtanga yoga in beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Specialty classes include slow flow yoga, restorative yoga, and yoga for injury recovery. There will also be barre and ballet classes.

Some of the more unique offerings include the “five senses” class, where Sellick guides patrons through a series of poses designed to focus on each of the senses. “Essentially it’s a slow flow yoga class, and we’re going to touch every single one of our senses,” she explains. “So, for example, with sound. We’re going to do some with smell. We’re going to have different essential oils. With taste, we’re going to have alkaline water that is lemon- and lime- and cucumber-infused. So it’s going to be really fun. We’re going to try and stimulate all five senses and use it to calm us down.”

Once a month, a special class will feature a sound bath and tea. “it’s called Sunday sound bath and tea [and it will be] led by me,” says Sellick. “We start off with a beautiful sound bath, and we have all the different bowls, and chimes and tuning forks and different essential oils, a restorative mix, followed by a nice tea. it’ll be a different type of tea every time that kind of relates to the season.”

Sellick discovered her passion for yoga during the pandemic. Originally a school guidance counselor, she has always loved helping people find balance. “I just absolutely fell in love with it, and I was like ‘I want to do yoga for the rest of my life,” she says. “Life is too short. I need to be doing what I love. You’re helping people. You’re bringing peace. You’re bringing this calm feeling to people. Since I did that, I did not look back. I went into yoga full-time. I’ve worked at studios across Long Island, and I always dreamed of my own studio and just creating my own vibe.”

The mission of Yoga Folk is to make yoga accessible to as many people as possible.

“[I want] to create a space for everybody, I want everyone to feel welcome — old, young, in between, individuals with disabilities — everyone to have a class that caters to them, but especially moms. I want moms to feel like they have a place here as well. I’d like it to be inclusive place.”
