As the bitter cold weather leaves us with more time spent indoors, winter is a great opportunity for a little self-care. The Sound View Greenport’s (58775 County Road 48, Greenport) Winter Wellness Series was created for those who would like to focus on nutrition, meditation, gently moving the body or exploring something new.

“In the winter, the dining room is moved to a cozier, smaller space,” says Kara Hoblin, the Sound View’s director of guest culture and experiences. The hotel’s restaurant, The Halyard, transforms into a rotating wellness and art collective in the winter months, offering a varied menu of classes, workshops, lectures and salons, all set against the striking backdrop of the Long Island Sound.

Yoga sessions with Lucy Nystrom are offered on Saturdays and Sundays and are open to the public (and free for hotel guests). Different types of yoga classes, like Yin yoga and partner yoga, are on tap as well. A monthly breath-work session with Mary Cognat focuses on activating the body’s energy, releasing emotions, and heightening intuition. A sound healing session with Mridu Singhal is scheduled for March 5, and North Fork Meditation, a local nonprofit, offers a guided meditation and workshop on breaking bad habits on March 22.

Hoblin points out that wellness is not only about fitness but is also about creative development.

“Art and wellness go hand in hand,” she notes.

The Sound View’s popular Nameless Writers Salon, introduced last year by Hoblin and local author Matt Daddona, kicks off the season on January 30 and returns monthly until April, featuring welcoming sessions where four or five writers read their work around a selected theme. Drinks and food are available and attending the salon is free, but reservations are necessary as space is limited.

The Sound View’s Uncommon Artist Residency program is now in its 8th year and was originally started by hotel owner Erik Warner. Up to 10 artists are selected each year for a week-long stay, which ends with a lecture or a class by the artist and a visit afterward to their studio space to see and discuss works in progress. On Feb. 9, photographer Kerry Sharkey Miller will speak at 5:30 p.m. followed by a studio tour; on Feb. 23, painter Alan Bull lectures at 5:30 p.m. followed by a studio tour. Both sessions are free, but participants must register online.

New this year is a lecture series, curated by Lucy Nystrom of New Moon Health & Wellness and Dr. Stephenie Pisacano of Tulsi Vis, Fuctional & Lifestyle Medicine. The first lecture by Pisacano is on March 2 on Functional Medicine and Natural Therapeutics and how stress, nutrition and environment can influence health; the series runs through April with different speakers.

Sound View owner Erik Warner “has been a supporter of arts and culture from the beginning,” says Hoblin, and has “stayed true to the culture of the North Fork.”

Indeed, most of the instructors and practitioners live and work on the East End, and the public is warmly welcomed and encouraged to take advantage of the slate of activities, whether one is looking to deepen your personal practice or try something new.
