Today is Tumbleweed Tuesday on the East End. For the uninitiated, Tumbleweed Tuesday is the day after Labor Day, when all the summer revelers depart and things quiet down from Riverhead to Orient (or from Westhampton Beach to Montauk if you’re on the South Fork).
Of course, Tumbleweed Tuesday isn’t as quiet as it used to be — there is still plenty of fun to be had on the North Fork in the fall, and with more full-time residents than ever, the area doesn’t exactly go into hibernation.
We polled our staff on their post-Labor Day plans. From cider to corn mazes, our team has a fun fall lined up!
This fall, my goal is to explore the spookier side of the North Fork! I am looking forward to the historic Graveyard Tour at North Fork Community Theatre on Oct. 15, and would love to traverse the Harbes Orchard’s Spooky Night Maze! Every year I plan to go, and every year my friends and family refuse to come with me. How scary could it possibly be? — Lee Meyer
I would love to spend a fall day driving out to Manor Lane in Jamesport to the Woodside Orchard. I enjoy their traditional dry cider on tap. It’s nice, crisp and very refreshing. I will also participate in picking some apples that are in season and head home with some apple cider doughnuts to enjoy later on. Sounds like a perfect fall day! — Flora Cannon
I am planning to attend the living history event Sept. 15 at the Southold Historical Society. My whole family is coming with me; we’re big into history and reenactments. When I asked my 15-year-old if he wanted to attend, he said “yeah, duh.” I’m looking forward to the old-time music and the demonstrations. — Amanda Olsen
This fall, I’m looking forward to riding my bike to Minnow at the Galley Ho in New Suffolk for lunch on a beautiful, crisp fall day. Their panoramic view out to the Peconic Bay can’t be beat!
I’m also hoping to play some tennis and/or pickleball on the Peconic Lane courts with friends and head to the Greenport Harbor Brewery for some great food and tasty beer — probably their Leaf Pile pumpkin-flavored ale. — Sarah Olsen
