Acrobatics and an uplifting story will take center stage at Peconic Community School (27685 Main Road, Cutchogue) from Aug. 9-11. Hideaway Circus presents “Canvas Sky,” a touring troupe featuring 10 world-class performers who depict a story of a clown learning to find his voice. The show is entirely outdoors, under the stars, in the school’s back field at its new campus.

Peconic Community School was founded 12 years ago by sisters Liz Casey and Kathryn Casey Quigley. The child-centered, community-minded education center is made up of nearly 100 students, 25 full-time faculty and staff and “a stellar reputation for offering uniquely progressive, learner-driven and community-integrated education,” according to the organization.

The sisters began with the vision of the school as “just one component of a larger organization that offered creative, artistic and cultural events for the community,” says Quigley. Since renting new property for the campus in Cutchogue, the school is now able to host events like the circus.

Quigley recognized the “total moment of kismet” in the opportunity to host this kind of performance when a summer camper’s parents mentioned the circus.

When one of the circus’s founders came to visit the school property looking for a North Fork performance space, it became clear to Quigley that there were “lovely connections between the goals of the school and the goal of this particular performance — infusing arts and creativity into a message of the power of being yourself.” It was an “immediate and enthusiastic yes,” she recalls.

While marveling over acrobatics, trapeze, juggling, plate spinning and more, audiences will witness a meaningful tale of self-discovery and friendship. This family friendly experience is appropriate for all ages and audiences are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair.

Tickets are on sale for $29 here. Proceeds are split between the circus troupe and general Peconic Community School funding.
