For almost 30 years, the Macari family has been growing grapes and making wine on the North Fork. As winemaking and agricultural techniques have advanced, so has the Macari family’s approach to business. Whether through renovations or new concepts at their tasting rooms or by finding new roles for family members to excel at, the family has adjusted their sails to continue making world-class wines with a focus on biodiversity and sustainability. Director of Operations, Gabriella Macari’s pick of 2022 Katherine’s Field Blend is an ode to September when a crisp, refreshing wine is the perfect way to savor the final days of summer.

The style: This wine highlights a carefully balanced blend of 100% sauvignon blanc from Macari’s Mattituck vineyard. In making this wine, the team experimented with integrating more lees contact into the aging process, which added a more subtle, savory quality.

Flavor profile: A zippy palate and bright notes of kiwi, passion fruit and citrus zest. This sauvignon blanc has a savory quality that deepens the palate and buttresses the fruit with a subtle creaminess.

Pairs with: Pairs beautifully with fresh, local seafood.

Aging process: Aged in stainless steel tanks.

Ideal serving temp: 45 degrees.

On the nose: Bright notes of lime zest and tarragon.

To hold or not to hold: The team at Macari is interested in seeing how this wine evolves over the next few years as the savory qualities should start to take center stage.

Best time to drink: This wine is ideal to drink now.

Macari Vineyards Katherine’s Field Sauvignon Blanc 2022 costs $23/bottle and can be purchased at their tasting room located at 150 Bergen Ave., Mattituck.
