At Downs Farm Preserve in Cutchogue, visitors can picnic among a blooming bed of flowers filled with buzzing pollinators. The garden, along with a native meadow and thicket areas, are part of a restoration project by Group for the East End, an organization dedicated to environmental advocacy, conservation, and education on eastern Long Island. Partnering with the Town of Southold, the organization has been planting native species at the site since 2020 to provide nourishment and shelter for essential insect populations and local wildlife. Over time, the organization plans on rewilding more and more areas of the 52-acre preserve.
