On a sunny spring day, we visited John Murnane as he was planting onions at his beef cattle farm in Southold.

Located on the northeast corner of Youngs Avenue and Route 48, the property has been used for farming for over a half decade. Murnane purchased the land from Peconic Land Trust in 2018, though he is anything but a novice. The farmer grew up on a farm in Ireland, where he learned to tend to farm animals and crops like potatoes.

Spanning 18 acres, Olde Road Farm is home to cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks and pet miniature donkeys. Last year, the farm started selling their locally-grown, grass-fed beef to customers through their Instagram page, @olderoadfarm. Those interested in purchasing meat from Olde Road Farm can also email [email protected] for availability and pricing.
