A new small plates restaurant is coming to Stirling Square in Greenport.

Terra by American Beech from property owner Brent Pelton is replacing the cicchettie and wine bar Basso. Pelton, a Manhattan attorney, purchased the square in September 2014. He first opened the American Beech restaurant and boutique hotel in the largest buildings occupying the square in 2015.

The latest step in the revitalization of the historic property is the addition of Terra, which Pelton describes as a tapas bar, though the details of the new restaurant were still being worked out, he noted.

“We are really excited,” Pelton said Thursday. “It is keeping much of the same concept and doing small plates. We think it will be very complementary to the square.”

Terra will be a part of the American Beech brand, which expanded in 2018 to include another boutique hotel Aqua by American Beech in Aquebogue, but would have an atmosphere separate from the modern coastal vibes at the hotel and the full-service American Beech restaurant.

Architect Robert Brown is in charge of the renovations. The retail space in between Basso and the home décor shop Doofpot is currently unoccupied, and Brown said the plan is to, “change it to additional assembly space to be used as restaurant overflow and private meeting space.” He also said a handicap accessible bathroom would be added.

Pelton is anticipating a May grand opening.

Basso’s owner Nick DeCillis said he was looking to relocate the business, which opened in 2015, to another building in the village.
