Located in Tupper Lake, The Wild Center is a celebration of the natural surroundings of the Adirondacks.
It’s also a must-stop destination for families visiting that region, which spans from Lake George north to the Canadian border.
OUTSIDE
The highlight of The Wild Center is Wild Walk, a 30-foot high path among the treetops that features breathtaking views of the nearby mountains, wetlands and at this time of year, the fall foliage. Wild Walk includes a bird’s nest that gives you optimal views of the Adirondacks, a reproduction of a hollowed white pine visitors can walk through, and a spider’s web for children to jump and play in.
Of course, the 80-acre woodlands that surround the museum also include more traditional hiking trails, where more than 70 species of birds can be spotted.
INSIDE
Built in 2015, the museum — like the Wild Walk — was designed by artist Charles P. Reay. Also features a theater, live animals and wildlife exhibits teaching you about the habitat of the Adirondacks. Kids will also enjoy a playroom.

WHERE TO STAY
The Wild Center is only about a 40-minute drive from Lake Placid and its great downtown. High Peaks Resort is a great spot on Mirror Lake and within walking distance of restaurants we’d recommend, like The Breakfast Club, Etc. to start your day and Smoke Signals to end it. If it’s a camping experience you seek, check out the offerings in nearby Long Lake.
IF YOU LIKE IT
There’s really nothing quite like The Wild Center on the North Fork, but you can certainly take in nature at one of these trails we recently recommended. Also, if you’re seeking a fun interactive experience for families try the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead or Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton.
