The restaurateurs behind one of Shelter Island’s most popular restaurants are coming to Greenport.

Keith and Alison Bavaro, owners of Shelter Island’s SALT, will take over the Third Street space that most recently housed Blue Canoe.

“[We] are stoked about this opportunity,” Mr. Bavaro said in an email. He added that plans are still in the “development phase” and that no concrete proposals have been set for the property. He also did not disclose the terms of the lease.

The couple opened SALT, a laid-back waterfront restaurant where you’re just as likely to see a celebrity as a harelegger (that means native Islander), in 2012. The establishment is known for its floating dock and outdoor repurposed schooner known as the “Shipwreck Bar.”

Blue Canoe’s former operators quietly announced they were shuttering the restaurant for good via their Facebook page in April 2016. Owner Terry Harwood, who is also chef and owner of Shelter Island’s Vine Street Café, didn’t comment on the business’s closure.

Blue Canoe opened in 2012 at the site of the former Chowder Pot Pub, which operated for several decades. It’s considered to be one of the village’s most scenic locations, as it overlooks the harbor and Shelter Island can be seen in the distance.

Greenport’s restaurant scene continues to grow as plans for The Lucky Bee, an outpost of the Manhattan pan-Asian restaurant with the same name, and The Olive Branch Café, a Mediterranean eatery, were also recently announced.
