Expansive vistas of the North Fork’s bays, beaches and farmland are the inspirations for Max Moran’s seventh annual solo exhibition at the Jedediah Hawkins Inn Barn Gallery in Jamesport next month.
The show’s title, “Salt, Sand & Solitude,” showcases the artist’s depiction of nature in the plein air style, a French phrase meaning “open air.”
Moran paints the fields and bays near his Baiting Hollow home, which provide inspiration for his work.
“I like to seek out these sacred, rural environments with broad horizon lines and celebrate them, record them,” he said.
Born in the Midwest, Moran attended the Columbus College of Art and Design on a scholarship. His early work focused on Ohio’s Amish community and the Columbus Ballet Met. Along the way, Moran has painted on Martha’s Vineyard, as well as in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, and Manhattan. He now focuses his work on the North Fork, where he has lived since 1996.
Rather than display his art in a traditional gallery setting, Moran prefers to hold his own exhibitions in locations which, to him, have deep local roots.
“The Barn Gallery at Jedediah Hawkins Inn is a perfect example of the amazing synergy of art, food, wine and history that we all love about the East End,” Moran said.
An opening reception for “Salt, Sand and Solitude” will be held Sunday, Sept. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jedediah Hawkins Inn Barn Gallery. Moran’s exhibit will be on view through Sept. 20.
