I’ve probably been told, “You need to go to the Mexican place behind Haiku” at least 10 times. It wasn’t until last week that I actually heeded this advice.

It’s safe to say I was not disappointed.

An authentic Mexican restaurant in downtown Riverhead, Las Mexicanas Tacos, serves everything from quesadillas made with handmade tortillas ($7) to tostadas ($10). It’s located at the former Blue Agave site.

The restaurant is decorated simply, priced reasonably and the service is friendly. I was served by Maria Veliz, one of the partners who runs the place and also makes the hot sauce.

The real star on my trip to Las Mexicanas Tacos, however, was the food itself.

I ordered the enchiladas verdes — three corn tortillas filled with chicken and cheese, topped with green enchilada sauce, sour cream and crumbled cheese, and  served with rice and & beans for just $10. They also served complimentary tortilla chips with a bean dip.

The enchiladas were spicy without being overpowering and for $10 the amount of food and the taste make this little hidden gem well worth a stop for lunch.

Las Mexicanas Tacos is open Monday through Friday from 12 to 9 p.m. and 11 to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  It’s located in the alleyway between Barth’s Drug Store and Green Earth Grocery on East Main Street.
