Will Gildersleeve of Renee’s Outdoor (10780 Main Road, Mattituck, 631-298-7340) knows a thing or two when it comes to creating an open-air sitting space that feels like vacation in your own backyard. For Gildersleeve, whose parents own and operate Renee’s indoor store just across the street, it often starts with finding an anchoring piece or two and building out from there. It’s also about finding inspiration from the North Fork’s splendor, and offering pieces that can double for both outdoors or in. “I really like creating spaces that feel both unique and take advantage of the beauty of the North Fork,” he says. “It’s all about being outdoors here.”

Gildersleeve says to keep in mind that you can often customize furniture to match your budget. “Prices depend on what finish a piece is in, how many pieces, the level of cushion insert, etc.,” he says. “All [of this] can drastically affect the price based on what you choose for furniture.”

Summer Classics McKenna Outdoor Chandelier, large, $1,095 While many homes have utilitarian outdoor lighting, Gildersleeve suggests adding light that adds atmosphere as well as illumination, like this rattan chandelier.

Marie Albert teak and stainless dining table, $4,895 It’s an investment, but if you spend a lot of time in your backyard, the strength and durability of teak can’t be beat. This ample table seats 10, always offering a seat for family and friends.

Marie Albert teak side chair, $695, and teak armchair, $795 Roomy and sturdy, these matching Marie Albert teak side and armchairs complete the dining picture.

Four Hands Basil Square accent table, $895 Instead of one giant coffee table, Gildersleeve is a fan of double-teaming accent tables, which not only adds more space for food and drink, but also makes for a more versatile conversation area.

Summer Classics Malta teak sofa, $5,295, and club chairs, $2,595 each Made from slow-growth plantation teak and stainless steel, the super deep cushions and generous profile are the right respite for languid summer days.

Bramble bench, $995 This versatile bench can work as lounge or table seating, or even by the pool. This cushy-topped version offers both comfort and style.

Four Hands graphite end table, $345 Designed in-house, Four Hands has been making stylish and sturdy pieces for almost 30 years, like this stunning, earthy graphite and concrete end table.
