When choosing between spicy, lamb, barbecue or old fashioned meatballs, most people prefer nonna’s cooking served with Sunday gravy.
At least that’s what the results of the first meatball contest held at Deep Water Bar and Grille on Sunday would suggest. Ten local cooks and restaurants donated a tray of meatballs for the contest, which benefitted The Wounded Warrior Project.
Judges nibbled on the sauce covered creations and voted for their favorites.
“It’s whatever reminds you of grandma the most,” Steve Pisacano of Cutchogue said of which contestant would get his vote. “It all comes down to plain taste.”
Lillian McCarthy took home first place for her traditional Italian meatballs. Laurie Whiter received second for her “Great Balls of Fire” which were served with a tasty ricotta sauce. And Front Street Station in Greenport took home third for its “Bar B Q Balls.” All winners received a Deep Water gift certificate.
“We had over 200 meatballs and it was a lot of fun,” said Deep Water owner Beth Pike, who thanked her staff for helping pull off the event. She also thanked the “meatballers’ and the raffle sponsors which included Osprey’s Dominion, Kessie, Greenport Fire, Ammirati’s of Love Lane, North Fork Smoked Fish Co., Love Lane Sweet Shoppe, Goldsmith’s Toys and Electronics, Front Street Station, Alice’s Fish Market, Peggy and George Beach and The Corridan Family.
