Join artist Cindy Pease Roe as she shows off her sea-inspired original works at her Greenport gallery on Thursday.
Roe has been making sculptures from beach trash, such as the reindeer-like “Lobster Buoy Boy” pictured on the following page, for the past four years. She collects discarded plastic that washes up on the shore along the Sound during her daily walks with her two boxers and turns the refuse into her signature pieces.
She says autumn is the key foraging season on the East End.
“The North Winds drive whatever is in the water, it brings it right onto our shores on Long Island,” she said. “When the wind switches, you get everything from Maine on down.”
Roe collects the discarded items, sorts them by color and materials and repurposes them into the vibrant nautical-themed works of art on display in her gallery. She also makes paintings using the encaustic method, an ancient Greek process that uses melted wax.
Cindy Pease Roe Studio & Gallery will host an open studio party Thursday, June 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. Beer and wine from Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. and Lieb Cellars will be served as well as appetizers from First and South in Greenport. The gallery is located at 190 Sterling St. and the event is free.
