Walter and Jan Davis take great care to preserve the past by restoring family heirlooms and, with that, childhood memories at their doll repair shop on Main Road in Southold

The couple, co-owners of the Southold antique store the Long Island Doll Hospital, were featured in a recent Newsday profile, published online on June 24.

The couple frequents toy conventions and thrift shops to stock up on parts, especially doll eyes which break when the toy is placed on its back for too long. Many dolls made before 1930 were constructed from a glue, sawdust and cardboard composite and Jan Davis mixes her own.

There are few people out there who do this type of work, she said.

“It’s a shame,” Jan Davis told Newsday. “It’s going to be a lost art.”
