The Friends of the Shelter Island Public Library will be hosting the Turkey Plunge, rain, snow or shine, on Saturday, November 30 at 11 a.m. at Crescent Beach. Shelter Island will be an island of fun tomorrow Saturday, August 24. At the Center firehouse, located on Route 114 in the heart of town, the Shelter Island Fire Department will host a Country Fair between noon and 3 p.m. There will be something for everyone — a pig roast, turkey, sausage and peppers, kielbasa, as well as hot dogs and burgers with all the accompaniments. Kids can enjoy the bounce house, try their luck at games and take a tour of the firehouse and the firetrucks. There will be music by Joe Lauro’s band and a food raffle sponsored by Schmidt’s Market. Rory Kennedy takes a break from her summer holiday on Shelter Island to screen her film, “Ethel,” and discuss it with fellow Islanders at the Shelter Island Public Library’s popular Friday Night Dialogues tonight August 16.
“Ethel” — just nominated for five Emmy awards — “is a loving, touching and sometimes mischievous tribute to Ethel Kennedy … a private look inside a highly public life,” wrote The New York Times in a review prior to last October’s airing on HBO. (more…)
