NAMELESS WRITERS SALON presents THE BIG SURPRISE
The Nameless Salon, created by friends and artists Kara Hoblin and Matthew Daddona in 2023, returns for its second season on 1/30/25…with surprises in store. Writers will read various fictions and non-fictions about times they’ve been shocked, startled, and stupefied, and how those times have produced profound, lasting discoveries. Readers will be announced in the coming weeks, and an open mic portion will follow that evening’s featured readers. As always, trivia will occur during intermission. Open mic is always first come first serve, sign up on the list when you arrive.
Speakers:
Daisy Cashin is a writer surviving in New York City by way of the South. His work has appeared in HAD, Farewell Transmission, and monthly on the ever-growing Substack, I Hate These People. To his surprise, he’s just finished his first novel, Dirt Pusher, a cheery tale about a gravedigger named Joe.
Matt Coonan is a poet, emcee & teacher from New York. He holds an MFA in creative writing and literature from Stony Brook University. He is the author of Toy Gun (Button Poetry, 2023), and his poems have been published in Tinderbox Poetry Journal, The Southampton Review, Inklette, among others. He is always surprised by dehumidifiers. You mean to tell me that much water was in the air?
Deborah Hauser is the author of Ennui: From the Diagnostic and Statistical Field Guide of Feminine Disorders (Finishing Line Press). Her poems and book reviews have appeared in Ms. Magazine, Women’s Review of Books, The Kenyon Review, Prairie Schooner, Bellevue Literary Review, and Calyx. Her work explores the intersection of poetry and activism. She is the Poet Laureate of Suffolk County and founder of Poetry In Action. She is pleasantly surprised to have discovered this reading series.
Lee Meyer is the managing editor at Times Review Media Group. An award-winning journalist with a passion for telling stories about people, Lee has written for various magazines, newspapers, and websites for over a decade. Lee lives in Greenport with his partner, Brandon, and has discovered many big surprises in his journey north, having grown up on the South Shore of Nassau County, including the wonderful community and really, really good shellfish.
Stuart Pennebaker is a writer and former bookseller. She lives in the East Village where she works and teaches for Gotham Writers Workshop. Her first novel, Ghost Fish, will be published by Little, Brown in August. In October of the year 2000, her parents threw her a surprise birthday party at the Pizza Hut in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina, and since then she has generally only enjoyed surprises if they involve snacks.
