About
CALVERTON, NY — Long Island’s only certified-organic vineyard says the secret to its award-winning bottles isn’t just in the soil — it’s in the stars.
On Saturday, July 12 (9 a.m.–noon), Farrm Wines will throw open the farm gate for a small-group “Growing Biodynamic Wine” tour that blends lunar lore, sustainable farming and a five-wine tasting. Tickets are $33.85 on Eventbrite and space is capped to keep things intimate.
Moon-Guided Farming, Up Close
Visitors will learn about organic farming from Rex Farr Long Island’s only certified organic vintner, and biodynamics from Steve Storch, biodynamic expert and inventor of the Vortex Brewer®. You’ll learn about the ancient practices and preparations, the cosmic connections, and you will experience the difference in the soil, the air the wine.
From ground quartz and sea minerals in the living “tea” prep to the give in the ground you will stroll on vines, and the clean taste of the terroir in the generous samples of award-winningMerlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Reserve.
Each vintage tastes a little different under shifting cosmic rhythms.
“When the moon is in perigee, furthest from the Earth, the vines extend,” explains Steve Storch. “That’s the perfect moment to apply certain sprays, because the sap is rising and the plants are most receptive.”
From Potato Field to Cosmic Vineyard
Rex and Connie, a local farmers with a passion for preservation, earned the only USDA organic certification for their vegetable farm in 1990—decades before “clean wine” became buzz-worthy. Later, they exchanged part of their farm for a vineyard and now both carry both USDA Organic seals. They have been farming biodynamically for years and are working towards achieving their Demeter certification this year.
Farrm Wines will be the region’s only vineyard with that double distinction should they accomplish the feat.
