About
On Friday,
July 18th, Greenport Harbor Brewing Co. will host their latest art exhibition, “Postcards
from the Rock” at their Greenport Village tasting room. The exhibition will
showcase the abstract works of Gavin Zeigler.
Gavin
Zeigler is a Shelter Island-based visual artist, sculptor, and photographer
that has created several series of mixed media abstractions utilizing
repurposed objects and unearthed ephemera—pennies, keys, defunct stock
certificates and bank checks. Zeigler has found a distinct voice and vision
within these found objects, items that have faded into the background or
approaching obsolescence, mining an iconography that has become commonplace and
peripheral, yet bears a texture through its transactional function that Zeigler
interprets as collaborative.
His mixed
media collages utilize antique stock and bond certificates, each bearing its
unique markings of signatures, serial numbers, dates, stamps, and perforations
signifying something of a historical journey to its current form as a found
object within Zeigler’s art. They loom in the background, obscured and
seemingly out of reach beneath several coats of paint. “It adds an element of
discovery,” Zeigler explains, demonstrating the subtle interactive quality of
his pieces, naturally drawing our eye to the icons and artifacts concealed
under patterns of paint, creating a sense of texture and depth, evolving based
on our proximity to each piece. Like a spectral transmission, these fragments
reach out to us, renewed as they are rediscovered.
“Postcards
from the Rock” will hold its opening reception on Friday, July 18th,
2025, from 7 to 9 p.m. at GHBC’s flagship location at 234 Carpenter Street,
Greenport, NY. This exhibit will be on view through September 2025.
Newly
released brews on tap and local wine available.
