About

“Master of the Macabre,” an exhibit featuring cartoons and illustrations by Gahan Wilson, one of the most
popular cartoonists in the world, will open at the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum on Thursday, July 8th at the SHWHM. The exhibit will run until September 5th.

Ghoulish, unsettling, crazy, creepy, insane, mad, bizarre… All these words (and more) have been used to
describe the art, humor, and genius of Gahan Wilson. But if only one word could be used to describe his
work, the most appropriate and accurate would likely be – Masterful.

Wilson was a recognized master of the one-panel format, often considered to be the pinnacle of the cartoon
artist’s profession. It calls for achieving the maximum effect with the most minimum use of art and word. His
ability to create characters and situations that were at once familiar and slightly oh-so-terrifying was
unparalleled.

Wilson (1930-2019) was a summer resident of Sag Harbor for some 25 years, and the SHWHM is proud and
delighted to present over 40 color and black-and-white original works.

Mr. Paul Winters, Wilson’s step-son, may be available for interview; please contact Richard Doctorow, Director
of the SHWHM (631-725-0770) for details.

The Museum is open Thursdays through Saturdays, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, with last entry at 4 pm.
Ample parking is available in the rear of the building, off Garden Street.
