‘Tis the season for avoiding the colds and sicknesses that come with chilly weather.

Thanks to the Center for Advocacy, Support and Transformation, Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital and Southold Town all residents of the North Fork, Shelter Island and beyond are invited to find resources to build a healthy foundation at the annual health fair.

The three organizations are continuing their collaboration that started in 2019 to bring all kinds of personal health and wellness support to the Peconic Recreation Center on Oct. 16.

From 2 to 6 p.m. come connect with over 20 providers, including Fidelis Health Insurance, The Retreat, Family Service League of Riverhead, THRIVE Recovery Long Island, and Southold Fire Department.

SBELIH will offer screenings and information on women’s health, nutrition, senior options and solutions, behavioral health, general surgery, sports and family medicine. There will also be hearing, mental health, hygiene and vision services available.

“These are things that people wouldn’t normally encounter in their everyday [routines],” says CAST executive director Erica Steindl. “I think it’s just important to have all of this in one spot.”

If you’re interested in checking out all that the fair has to offer but worried about how to entertain the kids, fear not — the kids’ corner has face painting and pumpkin decorating.

“We wanted to provide an environment where people don’t feel pressure and they can have their kids enjoy activities while they explore different resources,” says Steindl.

CAST has been aiding underserved and vulnerable populations for six decades. The organization’s mission is to ensure food, shelter, education and health security to North Fork and Shelter Islanders while also promoting self-sufficiency.

At SBELIH, 70 beds and an attentive staff care for 25,000 year-round residents, providing behavioral health, medical surgery, orthopedics, general surgery, wound care, interventional pain management, gastroenterology, advanced ambulatory care, diagnostic laboratory and radiology services and physical therapy services.

In the past, the organizations have seen about 100 to 150 attendees, but the most important part of the day, Steindl says, is that “this is a health fair that is open to everyone.”
