This past Saturday, the Mattituck Park District (MPD) presented their first free concert of the season at Veterans Memorial Park (11280 Great Peconic Bay Boulevard, Mattituck, 631-298-9103), with Mean Gene & the Flamethrowers performing a salute to the ’60s on a sunny, breezy summer day.
“We’ve had nothing but positive reactions—people love it,” says Kevin Byrne, chairman of the board of commissioners of MPD of the bayside concert series. Byrne, who also serves as the event’s emcee, estimates that about 2,000 people attended the concerts last year.
Four more concerts are on tap in July and August, including rock-and-blues band Who Are Those Guys on July 5, The Eagle River Band (an Eagles tribute group) on July 19, Crosby, Stills and Nash tribute band Four Way Street on August 9, and, keeping with the homage theme, Beatles tribute band Liverpool Shuffle on August 31.
Each concert features a rotating cast of local wineries, breweries and food trucks serving food and drink; concertgoers are welcome to bring their own treats to enjoy as well.
In addition to the music, MPD is planning two free Movies in the Park nights for families on Friday August 15 and Saturday September 7, where first-run films will be shown on a giant screen. Popcorn and ice cream from Magic Fountain will be available for the kids (and adults, too) — stay tuned for film titles and times.
In addition to the good folks at MPD who coordinate, host and clean up after the events, local sponsors for the concert and film series are a vital part of providing the summertime music and film entertainment series to the community. Sponsorships are still needed and are available at various levels.
Don’t miss the chance to catch a show at one of the most pleasant places on the North Fork to spend a summer evening. The concerts run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and are free to the public. More details on concert and film dates and times may be found on the Mattituck Park District’s website.
