Northforker readers may know AJ Lang and his husband, Louis Marra, for their striking bungalow in Mattituck.

Their mid-century modern home, styled from wall-to-wall with luxe furnishings with pop-culture finishes, was featured in the 2022 home edition of the magazine. But a unique and fabulous sense of style is just one aspect of Lang and Marra’s interests.

Lang, a Wading River native, is also a self-proclaimed “yoga junkie” who has practiced since he was 11 years old, when his mother brought him to his first class.

“It changed my life forever,” he says. “Yoga is a state of mind and a meditation. The asanas [poses] are just ways to help deepen that meditation.”

Now a popular yoga teacher, his Far Out Yoga brand has found a following locally at studios like Karunā Hot Yoga in Greenport, where he designs creative yoga flows paired with fun playlists.

Here are a few of Lang’s favorite things:

Favorite place to take visitors The Times Vintage (429 Main St., Greenport, 631-477-6455) in Greenport. Lizzie has curated such a time warp to play in while trying on clothes, listening to vinyl and having fun exploring all the vintage finds. I never leave empty-handed.”

Favorite North Fork yoga studioKarunā (9 Sterlington Commons, Greenport, 631-477-6356). You should check out Far Out Sunday mornings at 8! Arthur, the owner, has created such a special place and has built a wonderful and welcoming community.”

Favorite coffee spot “The cold brew at Goodfood (535 Pike St., Mattituck, 631-298-7599) is where it’s at!”

Favorite meal made with a local product “I love whipping up a delicious Greek salad using Wickham’s Farm tomatoes and Goodale’s goat-milk feta cheese (Wickham’s Fruit Farm, 28700 Main Road, Cutchogue, 631-734-6441; Goodale Farms, 250 Main Road, Aquebogue, 631-901-5975). Chef’s kiss!”

Favorite beach “New Suffolk Beach (2650 Jackson St., New Suffolk, 631-734-6646; southoldtownny.gov) is a great local spot. We always wind up meeting someone new, and it’s an easy and nice journey to paddle out from there over to Robins Island.”

Favorite restaurant “The North Fork Table & Inn (57225 Main Road, Southold, 631-765-0177). Not only is the food always so fresh, delicious and seasonal, but I also got married there, so it’s a sweet spot.”

Favorite yoga pose “Eek, that’s tough. My whole day is essentially one giant yoga pose regardless of what I’m doing. But child’s pose is a nice spot to be in active rest. We hold a lot in our hips, so it’s a fantastic and magical release to really deepen this posture with practice.”

Favorite breakfast “Hands down, the Cutchogue Diner (27850 Main Road, Cutchogue, 631-734-7016). It’s such a classic space where out-of-towners and locals totally vibe. And on Saturdays and Sundays, Debbie will make you the best milkshake ever.”

Favorite place to see live music “Watching friends sing karaoke in the piano bar room at the Halyard (58775 Sound Ave., Greenport, 631-477-0666). In summer, we get there in time to watch the sun set over the Sound and then meander into the dark and cozy bar room afterward for a delicious bite, cocktail and live music.”

Favorite thing to do on a day off “I’m not good at not doing anything! Paddleboarding and swimming with my puppy, Joe; going for bike rides with my hubby, Louis; gardening; a good workout and stretch. You can always catch me doing anything outside on days off. And in the winter? A cold plunge in the bay, no puppy.”

Favorite local drink “A Brix & Rye (308A Main St., Greenport, 631-477-6985) martini… straight up, slightly dirty.”

Favorite time of year “Summer, definitely summer. May it never end. Although, some say summer is a state of mind.”
