Since its reopening in February 2024, Greenport’s Whiskey Wind bar (30 Front St.) has been a reliable and consistent port in a storm for anyone looking for late-night eats and cold beer.

Now, as the Whiskey Wind enters its second year under new management of co-owners Paul Monahan and Mike Rose, the two are excited to continue the bar’s new chapter.

Monahan is a partner in local businesses The Lin Beach House and Matchbook Distilling Co., while Rose is the owner of Bogey’s Bottled Goods in Southold. Over the last year, the partners have reestablished the bar as a hub for community in Greenport.

While the Wind’s fresh coat of paint certainly added some much-needed rejuvenation to the interior, the new menu of bar-friendly food like smash burgers and chicken tenders proved to be transformative for the business.

“Last year, we sold north of 3,500 smash burgers,” says Monahan. “That is a lot of Martin’s Potato Rolls! It was really surprising.”

The food — served until midnight seven days a week, turning Whiskey Wind into one of the only late-night dining spots in Greenport — proved so popular that Monahan added a “last call” for food orders every night in addition to the traditional last call for drinks.

To make the anniversary, Monahan and Rose rolled out an update to the food menu, with new sandwiches and apps to complement the smash burger, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks and more.

Sandwiches include Uncle Jimmy’s Chopped Cheese (named after former owner James Kuhlman), filled to the brim with mortadella and provolone, grilled and chopped with chili crunch and aioli on a toasted hero; hush puppies; a double-fried, Nashville-style hot chicken sandwich; and a cold Italian hero. And if you hit up the Wind on Wednesdays, you can get what Monahan refers to as a “disgustingly big” chicken parmesan hero with marinara and multiple cheeses.

Of course, the signature fried chicken dinner is still available and still just as popular.

Going forward, Monahan plans to roll out nightly drink specials with cocktails, add a frozen drinks machine and dabble in seasonal food specials, too.

“We’ve been very focused on making Whiskey Wind more of a hub for the community,” Monahan says. “We want it to be a starting point for anything celebratory. We really just wanted to turn it into a place where you could have it on your weekly or weekend routine.”
