Fur-tastic products from Harbor Pet in Greenport. (Photo credit: Doug Young)

It’s been a decade since Kim Loper became the proprietor of Harbor Pet, Greenport’s furry friends go-to at 120 Main Street, offering everything from food, treats and toys to stylish cold-weather gear, collars, leashes and beds, along with grooming services and always lots of friendly pet-centric advice.

“We’re your hometown pet shop. I see the same people all the time, whether they’re locals or second homeowners. I get to watch the dogs grow up – it’s fun,” Loper says. “It’s nice to be part of the community. I come from a small town, too – I know how important it is to shop local.”

A Center Moriches native and resident, Loper’s not only become the friendly face catering to all your dog and cat needs since she bought the original Harbor Pet business in 2013, she expanded her homemade dog-treat brand, Grrowlers, and moved Harbor Pet’s grooming options into the building next door, offering traditional grooming services as well as nifty self-serve wash stations. For the $30, 45-minute sessions, she supplies the soap, towels, brush, dryer and an apron to keep the shaky-shaky splatter off you. Fo your part: “Just bring your dirty dog!” she laughs.

Grrowlers pet treats, $11.99 for an 8 oz bag

Loper’s homemade treats come in four flavors (chicken liver, beef liver, sweet potato and honey, and peanut butter and banana), and she uses spent grains from local breweries to supply the low-gluten treats with fiber and protein. “We’ve saved 74 tons of grain from being tossed,” says Loper.

Pupsicle chew toys and treats,$19.99 to $35.99

If your dog has the kind of formidable bite that can kill a Kong, Loper swears by these chew-proof alternatives. The Denver-based company offers chews for puppies and adult dogs, with special treats that you can pop inside in flavors like beef, chicken and peanut butter, and even ones with CBD for anxiety-ridden pups.

Cycle Dog collars, $28.99 to $32.99

Made from recycled inner tubes, these American-made, waterproof, neon-bright colored collars are stink-proof, have a built-in bottle opener and are guaranteed for life — if it breaks, Cycle Dog will replace it.

Dharma Dog/Karma Cat beds, starting at $54.99

Ethically sourced and made in Nepal from 100% fair-trade felted sheep wool, these cute, comfy beds for smaller pets come in pretty two-toned color options and are shaped like a blooming flower. They even make cat cave versions if your best buddy appreciates a little more privacy.

Fabdog Thermals, $24.99 to $36.99

If you want that perfect holiday photo op, snap up one of these 8” to 36” pet thermals for your four-legged friend in seasonal red with white stitching.
